Dr Martin McConaghy - Sports Medicine Doctor

Dr Martin McConaghy has been working as a Sports Medicine Doctor for over 15yrs. He has  extensive experience as a Team Doctor, working with Belfast Harlequins Rugby Football Club 2002 – 2006, the County Armagh Senior Gaelic Football Team from 2006 – 2015, the Ulster Railway Cup Football Team since 2008 and is currently Team Doctor to the Irish International Rules Team for the 2015-2017 series.

Martin qualified in Medicine from Queen’s University, Belfast, in 1997. He spent 4 years as a hospital doctor before specialising in Sports Medicine and General Practice.  Martin was awarded a Diploma in Sport & Exercise Medicine in 2001, was elected as a Fellow of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine Ireland in 2003 and is on the Specialist Register for Sport and Exercise Medicine in Ireland.

Martin combined working as a Sports Medicine Specialist in his own private clinic, The Ulster Sports Medicine Clinic (www.ulstersportsmedicineclinic.co.uk) along with working as a part-time NHS GP Partner in Portadown Health Centre (2006 – 2016). He has just left General Practice to focus on a full-time career in Sports Medicine. Martin runs his Ulster Sports Medicine clinics at DBSM, Lurgan, Belfast and Cookstown.

In addition to his clinical work, Martin has worked on various sports medicine committees.  He was elected Chairperson of the Gaelic Games Doctors Association in 2016. He was elected as a Board Member of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine (Ire)  in November 2007, going on to become Secretary from 2008 to 2010 then Treasurer from 2010 to 2011. He was Chairperson of the BASEM committee in Northern Ireland from 2005 - 2010.  

Martin has extensive experience in managing sports injuries, medical conditions and on injury prevention, in elite and recreational athletes from a wide variety of sports.  He also regularly sees patients of all ages who have muscle and joint problems which are not sport related eg back pain, work related injuries, accidents etc. He has a particular interest in concussion and runs a concussion assessment and treatment clinic as part of his sports medicine clinic. He also has a keen interest in the benefits of exercise for various health conditions eg neurological conditions, osteoporosis, falls prevention, respiratory conditions, cardiovascular conditions, mental health, cancers and obesity.
