Caolán first began studying sports in 2011 at North West Regional College in Derry, exiting with a triple distinction in Sport and Exercise Science. In 2014, Caolán enrolled at the Institute of Technology, Carlow to begin a BSc (Honours) degree in Sports Science and graduated from there in May 2017. As part of his degree Caolán was educated in a huge array of modules but took a keen interest in the more applied practices of sports science, in particular exercise physiology, sports performance and strength and conditioning. As part of his degree Caolán began a three month internship here at DBSM from January to March, 2017. During this period he worked with a huge number of amateur & elite level athletes in a variety of sports namely, GAA, Soccer, Athletics, Swimming, Boxing & Motorsport. From there, Caolán was offered a position to join the team here at DBSM as an athletic development coach and has thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with the many athletes that use the facility. Caolán is responsible for designing and implementing athletic development programmes for individuals and teams. These programmes are individually tailored to suit the goals of the athlete with a big emphasis on improving mobility, SAQ, power, running biomechanics, strength and ESD. With his background in Sports Science, Caolán has an added interest in Long Term Athletic Development & the relationship between training loads and sports performance with equipment like the Alter G anti-gravity treadmill, Watt bike testing and altitude training available to use on site. Caolán is a talented gaelic footballer, who has played school, college, club and most recently county football. Caolán has won a number of senior football championships with his club St. Eunan’s, Letterkenny and has also been a member of the Donegal Senior Football Team for the past two seasons, and was a regular in their defence throughout the 2017 campaign. Caolan is available for both group and individual strength and conditioning sessions helping people achieving there individual goals , in sport or in fitness drawing on his wealth of experience competing in elite level sport.
